Improve Brain Function

Jul 16, 2016 | Concussion, Neuro Rehab

This is a huge discussion. I read recently that we have learnt more about the brain in the last 5 years than in the last 100, and we have learnt more in the last year than the last 5.

There is a lot to discuss about Brain health or brain function so I will aim to focus on the biggest topics on what can be done therapeutically to help improve the way the brain works.

Its all about the big 3

  • Fuel (glucose)
  • Oxygen
  • Activation

Every nerve you have (around 7 trillion) needs the above 3 things to stay healthy. Not only that but they need just the right amount of each, too much or too little and the nerve will suffer.

The next big concept is a thing called ‘metabolic threshold’. Your nerves MT is its ability to keep up with demand, just like an engines ability to sustain rpm. If you have a good engine that gets serviced regularly, high rpm wont cause any problems. However, if your engine is unhealthy and you ask it too work hard, something will break.

The good news is that we all have this ability called NEUROPLASTICITY, which is your nerves ability to strengthen, allowing for more rpm or more signals to pass through that nerve. Neuroplasticity makes the nerve grow bigger, wider and have a higher metabolic threshold. This means that your Brain can get better, smarter and faster if you give it what it needs.

The PROBLEM is that when you go over your nerves MT it gets exhausted, and if it keeps getting used the exhaustion gets worse and worse until the nerve shrivels up and dies.

If enough nerves die in the same area of you brain you begin to lose function. This sounds like;

  • I keep getting headaches
  • My migraines are worse
  • I’m having trouble staying focused at school or work
  • My eyes jump around when I’m trying to read
  • Old injuries are bothering me
  • my digestion is not as good as before
  • I got a concussion and never recovered
  • this list could go on and on and on and only cover a 1/10th

The good news is that there is a group of practitioners called Functional Neurologists or Neuro-Rehabilitation that help to improve your nerve and brain function so that you can get back to being the healthiest you as possible. Dr Hansen’s specialty is on helping people suffering from balance issues and vertigo, concussions, anxiety, attention issues and improving quality of life.

We approach Brain health or brain function from a scientific approach and develop exercises to strengthen you nerves and brain to help you get healthier.
