Why Sciatica Occurs
Sciatica is the pinching of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. This muscle lies under the glute or buttock muscles and in most people the nerve runs directly under the muscle. Tightness of the piriformis causes sciatic nerve symptoms. This includes pain and tingling down the back of the leg that can extend to the bottom of the foot.
Sometimes, sciatica-like symptoms can present from other causes and be labelled sciatica, these causes are listed below.
Common Causes of Sciatica
Piriformis muscle tightness/syndrome, Disc injury, arthritis, nerve impingement. Excessive sitting, weakness in other surrounding muscles.
Our approach to treating sciatica
At Brain and Body Health we have been treating sciatica successfully since 2006. Ongoing study has changed our approach to include several techniques to get you out of pain asap.
Step 1
Assess the pain
Chiropractic examination to look at your musculoskeletal health combined with using Activforce or VALD Digital Strength Assessment to find the muscular imbalances that have led to the pain to help us figure out what we need to do to get rid of the pain. With piriformis syndrome this may be, more specifically, changing sitting habits and having frequent breaks.
Step 2
Get rid of the pain
Using a combination of techniques our goal is to get the pain under control so you can start strengthening your hip and leg. We need to release some muscles to provide initial relief, especially the piriformis. Techniques include: chiropractic, laser therapy, massage, dry needling, prologel for nerve pain.
Step 3
Make sure the pain doesn’t come back
You need to strengthen the weak muscles around your hip and leg to make sure the pain doesn’t return. Repairing the muscle imbalance that caused the pain in the first place is key.
