Whiplash impact on balance + treatment in clinic options – vestibular rehab, cervical joint position training

Oct 26, 2022 | Headaches, Neck Pain, Neuro Rehab, Uncategorized

Whiplash is an injury to the neck caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth motion of the head. The most common cause of whiplash is from rear-end car accidents and during contact sports. The muscles, tendons and other soft tissues that make up the neck can become strained, causing pain and discomfort. These symptoms can be treated through chiropractic adjustments, strength training and neck bracing.

The neck is made up of intricate mechanics that enable the correct function of the body. Working alongside inner ear sensations and eye movements, the neck sends neurological signals to the brain which notifies and determines where you are in space (balance). Whiplash can cause impairments to these signals, causing issues to arise. Cervical vertigo is a common neurological impairment caused by physical trauma to the cervical spine located at the base of the neck.

Common symptoms of vertigo include dizziness, nausea, headaches and involuntary eye movements. Vestibular rehabilitation aims at reducing dizziness and the secondary symptoms attributed to vestibular disorders (nausea, fatigue, concentration issues) through an exercise-based program developed from the findings of a series of vestibular assessments.
