Vagal Nerve Stimulation

Vagal Nerve Stimulation

The vagus nerve is a large nerve which travels from our head and neck all the way down into our abdomen. The vagus nerve is a major part of our parasympathetic nervous system responsible for resting, digesting and our relaxation response. Vagal Nerve Stimulation is a safe and effective way to increase the activity of this system by applying electrical impulses to the skin over the ear. The vagus nerve supplies part of the ear and by increasing sensory input into this region we can increase the nerves activity. At Brain + Body Health, this is one technique which may be used that is aimed at bringing the nervous system back into balance and increasing your relaxation response to better control stress and heart rate. Supplementary techniques which may be used to help increase parasympathetic activity include deep belly breathing, loud gargling or singing, or cold stimulus to the face.
