Neuroinflammation in concussions + treatment options in clinic – laser therapy and supplements

Dec 1, 2022 | Concussion, Neuro Rehab, Uncategorized

Concussions occur when a person experiences physical trauma such as a hit to the head or body resulting in the brain rapidly moving back and forth. Concussions are categorised as a type of minor Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) and require rapid treatment to reduce longevity. Concussions made up 9.3% of all sport-related injuries in 2018/2019, with four-hundred and thirty-four cases reported (SMH, 2021).

Inflammation is a natural response to injury and involves the immune system releasing chemicals to heal the area and remove dead neurons. Neuroinflammation occurs as a result of a mTBI and can have varying symptoms depending on what area of the brain is injured. In most cases a person will experience chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety and depression as a result of neuroinflammation. It is important to treat neuroinflammation as soon as possible as if left untreated, can cause further complications.

Laser Therapy

Transcranial laser therapy works via photobiomodulation, using specific light energy to stimulate processes occurring within the brain. This specific light energy reduces inflammation, increases energy production in the cells, stimulates regional blood flow and improves neurogenesis, the healing of neurons in the brain. Laser therapy is a great alternative to oral medication and other pharmaceutical treatment options.

Supplements

Supplements provide essential antioxidants which help counter symptoms of neuroinflammation. We don’t recommend taking supplements as a standalone treatment method, but encourage patients to take them alongside neuro therapy to provide extra relief. The three main supplements we recommend are:
