The Moro Reflex is an involuntary reflex to threat as well as a survival mechanism. It is the earliest reflex to emerge and forms a strong foundation for future life experiences. It is the first instance of the fight/flight/freeze/fright response that we see in adults. It is the earliest form of the ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ stress response, which is fully formed at birth. It then becomes evident as the baby’s head falls back when emerging from the birth canal, assisting in the opening of the lungs as the child takes its first breath.
If this reflex remains active in young children, it can be present as a child who is anxious, easily distracted and may have poor emotional regulation. The Moro Reflex can also be highlighted by a sensitivity to certain sensory stimulus such as light, sound, or busy environments. It is a whole-body response to sudden changes in vestibular, movement, auditory, visual, or tactical stimuli. The Moro Reflex is one of the many essential foundations for living.
